The XIII Meeting of the Administrative Commission of the “Regional Agreement for the Promotion of Trade through Overcoming Technical Barriers to Trade,” ALADI Regional Agreement No. 8, took place on Wednesday, October 21 and Thursday, October 22. Gastón Fernández, Head of the Regulatory Aspects of Trade Division of the Office of the International Economic Relations Undersecretary (SUBREI), is presiding over the body during 2020 and 2021.
The meeting allowed the work set out in the Critical Path in Regulatory Cooperation to continue. Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Peru and Paraguay have shown interest in making progress in the Cosmetics sector. By virtue of this, and in order to maintain a close relationship with the private sector, the Executive Director of the Council of Latin American Cosmetic, Personal Care and Home Care Industries (CASIC), Ariel Saiz, presented the cooperation efforts of various sub-regional blocs (the Pacific Alliance, Mercosur, and the Andean Community, among others), which include negotiating sectorial agreements as part of bilateral or sub-regional trade agreements.
The countries also reviewed the regular topics on the Regional Agreement No. 8 agenda, such as best regulatory practices, technical assistance, transparency, and the consultation mechanism for specific trade concerns.
The meeting was inaugurated by Álvaro Espinoza, the Free Trade Area Development Undersecretary, who greeted ALADI’s new Secretary General, Sergio Abreu, and wished him success and progress on his efforts during what has been a very difficult year at the global level. The Chilean delegation was represented by the Division of Regulatory Aspects of Trade and the Economic Director of the Chilean Embassy in Uruguay. The two-day meeting was attended by representatives of the 13 member states of the regional integration forum and over 50 delegates, all of whom were connected by a Webex platform.
