During a short ceremony held at the warehouse of Cenabast (Chile’s national health system procurement center), the Chinese Ambassador to Chile, Xu Bu, presented a significant donation of personal protective equipment to Chile’s Health Minister, Jaime Mañalich.
On February 28, the President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, and the President of China, Xi Jinping, held a conversation in which both leaders agreed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the area of public health in order to better combat the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, on March 18, the Chinese Embassy to Chile officially informed Minister Jaime Mañalich that the Chinese International Development Cooperation Agency would donate supplies to help prevent and control COVID-19.
The donation consists of more than 11,000 items of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers, including masks, goggles, gowns, and other items, such as infrared thermometers.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Xu Bu stated, “I greatly admire Minister Mañalich and his colleagues at the Health Ministry for their sense of urgency and responsibility. I have witnessed how hard you have been working day and night and all of your tireless efforts to combat this pandemic and protect the health of the Chilean people.”
The Ambassador added that, as a way of demonstrating the friendship his embassy has with Chile, 6,700 additional masks will be donated, apart from those given by his government. “I am convinced that under the leadership of President Piñera, the Chilean Government, and with the efforts of every Chilean, the country will beat this virus.”
Minister Mañalich expressed his gratitude for the donation. “We are thankful for all that the Chinese government and Ambassador Xu Bu are doing for Chile. Your help is invaluable. Also, you have just delivered a letter to me regarding a new and significant donation from a Chinese company. This shows the friendship between our peoples and our countries. On behalf of President Piñera, I would like to once again express our thanks, because we feel that we have a giant on our side as we fight to defeat this enemy; a fight that will be neither short nor easy,” stressed the Minister.
