President Piñera kicks off the payment of the COVID-19 Bonus to 2.7 million beneficiaries: “We feel your pain, your joy, your fears and hopes as though they were our own”
The initiative is among the series of measures with which the Government is seeking to protect families from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, and it will reach Chile’s most vulnerable groups of people.

The President of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, this Friday launched the payment of the Covid-19 Bonus, which will benefit over 2.7 million people.

The beneficiaries of the single family subsidy (SUF) will receive 50,000 Chilean pesos per dependent. Over two million people will receive this bonus. Meanwhile, families that are in the Security and Opportunities Subsystem will receive a per-family bonus of 50,000 Chilean pesos. Around 100,000 households are set to benefit.

Families that do not qualify for either of the above subsidies or family or maternity allowance or a social security pension but are among the 60% poorest households according to the Social Homes Register will receive a per-family bonus of 50,000 Chilean pesos. This bonus will be provided to 650,000 families.

“We share and feel your pain, your joy, your fears, and hopes as though they were our own because the first thing that motivates those of us who work in the public service to get up very early every morning and go to bed late every night is to accompany you and help you,” said the President. He was accompanied by Social Development Minister Sebastián Sichel and three families from among the 1.5 million households who will receive the bonus.

Seventy-five percent of the beneficiaries of the Single Family Subsidy (SUF) and the Security and Opportunities Subsystem, as well as other groups, will receive their bonus directly into their BancoEstado cuenta RUT (debit) accounts on April 17 and 18 - if they currently have such an account.

Those people who do not have a cuenta Rut account will be paid in person as of Monday, April 20, in branches of Caja Los Héroes or BancoEstado, depending on where they live. Those people who receive rural mobile payments from the Social Security Institute (Instituto de Previsión Social, IPS) who are entitled to this bonus will have it included in their usual payment in May.

“We are using these different instruments to try to protect the poorest sectors of our country who have been affected by this coronavirus pandemic,” explained the President.

The bonus implies an effort on the part of the State of US$167 million.

This bonus scheme is part of the integrated economic emergency plan launched by the President to protect vulnerable people and families and small businesses.
