At La Moneda Palace, the President signed the constitutional reform to change the date of the constitutional referendum in line with the rescheduling that was approved by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, instead of taking place on April 26, the constitutional referendum will now occur on October 25.
The primary elections for municipal and regional government will take place on November 29, while the elections for mayors, council members, governors and members of the constitutional body (if the result of the referendum is to approve the drafting of a new constitution) will be scheduled for April 11, 2021. If there is a second round in the election for governors, this will happen on May 9, 2021.
“It was not possible to put the health of the Chilean people at risk. So it was necessary to postpone the referendum and the whole electoral calendar,” explained President Piñera, who thanked Congress for approving this bill.“We are enacting this constitutional reform today to postpone the electoral calendar so that you do not put your life or even your health at risk by going to a referendum, which would be unwise in the midst of this pandemic,” said the President.
