Health Ministry reports Chile’s first Covid-19 death
The news was announced by Health Minister Jaime Mañalich, who said the victim was an 83-year-old woman in the municipality of Renca.

Health Minister Jaime Mañalich has confirmed the first death from Covid-19 in Chile. He said that the victim was an 83-year-old woman in the municipality of Renca, who had “many pre-existing health conditions”, including a chronic obstructive lung disease.

In regard to how she had become infected, the Minister explained that the woman had taken part in a family get-together of around 20 people. They included a person who had traveled abroad and did not at that time present symptoms but was later diagnosed with Covid-19.

The deceased contacted the emergency services on Tuesday, March 17, and was tested that same day. The following day she was admitted to the San Juan de Dios Hospital, where her condition deteriorated.

Early this morning, her health seriously deteriorated and her family took the decision to not use intensive treatments.

Her family members are in strict quarantine at home.
